This book is a beautiful retelling of the story of Gautama Buddha. It takes the reader through his spiritual journey and how and when he attained Enlightenment. Written in a simple and easy-to-understand style, this book will appeal to the young and old alike. This book shows us in more ways than one that the true road to self-discovery is through suffering and pain, and it is the tough times that bring out the best in us.

It is the story of the quest of Siddhartha, a wealthy Indian Brahmin who casts off a life of privilege and comfort to seek spiritual fulfillment and wisdom. On his journey, Siddhartha encounters wandering ascetics, Buddhist monks, and successful merchants, as well as a courtesan named Kamala and a simple ferryman who has attained enlightenment. Traveling among these people and experiencing life’s vital passages–love, work, friendship, and fatherhood–Siddhartha discovers that true knowledge is guided from within.

Description

AUTHOR OF THE BOOK

HERMANN HESSE (1877–1962) was one of the greatest literary figures of the twentieth century. Born in Calw to a Protestant family, he later rebelled against the classical education that he had received in Swabian monastery schools. Hesse began working as a locksmith and a bookseller, and later took to writing as a profession. Settled in Switzerland, he travelled to various countries, including India.

Politically, Hesse was opposed to German militarism, for which he was condemned by the Nazi government. In recognition of his contribution to literature, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1946. His other classic works include Steppenwolf and The Glass Bead Game.
